The Establishment of the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia in Western Australia
by Paul T. D. Peake
Email to a Friend
In this booklet, Paul Peake takes a detailed look at the establishment of SSAA WA and its implication for the legal status of firearms ownership in that state and, more broadly, Australia-wide.
The story begins before Australian settlement with a discussion British legal antecedents from the 17th century onwards. Peake continues with a discussion of early firearms laws in Australia and the formation of the SSAA in NSW and Victoria in the wake of post-WWII gun control measures.
Occupying centre stage in the booklet is the struggle to bring an idea (the WA branch of the SSAA) to fruition. Proponents faced difficulties from all fronts. The fledgling association had to convince others of its validity, starting with the national association, and continuing with WA Police and the WA Government. Peake describes these sagas in detail, finishing with the passing of the Firearms Act in 1973 and the legal recognition of SSAA WA Inc in 1974.
Extensively referenced, this book demands a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the past, present or future status of civilian firearms ownership in Australia.
